Casino Constanța – An Art Nouveau Jewel Shines in New Splendor with RHEINZINK
Located directly on the seafront promenade of the Black Sea, the casino in Constanța is one of Romania’s most significant landmarks. The historic building has undergone an extensive renovation and has been comprehensively restored, shining once again in its original splendor since May 2025 — thanks in part to the high-quality titanium zinc solutions from RHEINZINK.
Architectural heritage and eventful history
The casino has an eventful past: as early as 1880, the first building at this location was erected, constructed from wood. In 1910, the current structure was newly built in the Art Nouveau style according to the plans of Romanian architect Daniel Renard. It quickly became a fashionable meeting place on the Black Sea coast and is still considered Romania’s most important Art Nouveau building.
Over the course of its history, the building suffered extensive damage — both during World War I and World War II. At times, it was even used as an emergency hospital. In 1960, the casino became the property of the Romanian tourism authority. Despite repeated repairs, the building deteriorated for decades. Only in January 2020 did a comprehensive restoration begin, which was successfully completed five years later.
Renovation with RHEINZINK
Roof restoration played a central role in the renovation. RHEINZINK-prePATINA ECO ZINC blue-grey was used — more than 20 tons of premium titanium zinc in total. The roof was installed using traditional double standing seam technique, preserving the historical character of the building while ensuring maximum durability.
